The stereotype that life in Antarctica consists of endless canned food and semi-finished products has been debunked. At the "Academician Vernadsky" station, Ukrainian researchers live a full life where the diet includes not only traditional dishes but also burgers, and bread is baked right on site. The National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) reports this, refuting myths about meager nutrition in polar latitudes.
Survival logistics: supplies for months
The "Academician Vernadsky" station, located on Galindez Island in West Antarctica, is situated in conditions where food delivery is possible only a few times a year. Due to the harsh climate and complex logistics, polar explorers plan their menu not for a week, but for months in advance. Provisions are formed with a significant reserve: even in the event of a delivery delay, the team must have everything necessary for a balanced diet.
Canned food, of course, is present in the menu, but its role has changed. Now it serves more as a reserve or a staple for field expeditions, rather than a daily ration for daily life.
Kitchen at the edge of the world: from bread to burgers
One of the main discoveries for many is the fact that there is a bakery on the station. Polar explorers eat fresh, "local" bread baked directly on the base. This allows them to maintain simple domestic rituals: for breakfast, the team makes their favorite sandwiches, creating a sense of coziness even in extreme conditions.
The menu at the "Academician Vernadsky" station is diverse and includes:
- "Traditional" home-cooked dishes;
- Burgers, which are quite real in the polar explorers' menu;
- Fresh preparations that the cook makes in advance.
The nutrition system is organized to make life easier for the team. If the main cook has a day off, other members of the expedition take turns cooking. The cook prepares blanks for first courses in advance so that the cooking process is as simple as possible for the other participants.
Medical control and scientific research
The health of expedition participants is under strict control. Doctors conduct examinations monthly, paying special attention to possible vitamin and trace element deficiencies. Blood samples are collected according to the schedule.
Biomaterials are stored on the station under proper conditions, and after delivery to Ukraine, they undergo detailed laboratory analysis. This is not just a medical procedure but an important part of the scientific program, the goal of which is to study the impact of long-term stay in Antarctica on the human body.
Job opening for cooks
The National Antarctic Scientific Center reminded that a competition is currently open for the next, 32nd expedition. Among the vacancies, the position of a cook is traditionally available. For those who have the qualifications and the desire to explore the edge of the world, this is a chance not only to discover new horizons for themselves but also to ensure a tasty life for a whole team of scientists.
The main conclusion made by the expedition organizers is: full-fledged nutrition is not about having a supermarket around the corner, but about competent planning and care for people. Even in the harshest conditions, the diet can remain balanced and tasty.
