OpenAI has unveiled a major update to the ChatGPT Sites tool, transforming website and web application generation from a solo process into a collaborative one. The headline feature is Build Together, which lets users invite others to co-edit a single project. Invited participants can make their own changes, save them, and publish updates in real time, effectively turning the builder into a collaborative development environment.
Team Development via Build Together
The Build Together feature addresses one of the main complaints about earlier versions of the tool — the inability to work on a site together as a pair or a group. Now multiple editors can work on the same project simultaneously: edits are synchronized, change history is preserved, and updates are published without restarting generation. For small teams and freelancers, this means no more manual exchange of code and files.
Privacy and Enterprise Use
Alongside the collaboration features, the developers have added flexible privacy settings. A project can be made fully private, restricting access to specific individuals only. OpenAI emphasizes that this is convenient for building internal corporate tools, admin dashboards, and prototypes that should not be publicly accessible until final approval.
Working with Databases
Another notable improvement is a built-in viewer for connected databases. ChatGPT can now inspect the data associated with a site, and all project editors can quickly review the collected information without complex configuration or external clients. This lowers the barrier to entry for non-specialists and speeds up debugging of the "frontend — data" integration.
Technical Optimization and Custom Domains
Beyond functionality, the team has significantly optimized the technical side and visual design of generated sites. The time from entering a text prompt to full site deployment has been cut roughly in half. In addition, users can now connect their own custom web addresses instead of the default system links, making the created sites suitable for full-fledged work with clients and colleagues.
Context: Five Million Sites in Three Months
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Sites tool was consolidated into a single builder about three months ago, and since then users have created more than five million sites. The new update, as designed by the developers, is intended to retain and grow this audience by adding enterprise use cases and a team workflow that were previously unavailable in a generative builder.
