China is experiencing one of the most difficult rainy seasons in its history. The country's Ministry of Water Resources has recorded unprecedented precipitation activity, which has led to a critical rise in water levels in hundreds of rivers and large-scale natural disasters in various regions.
Record flood levels
The situation with water resources in the country has gotten out of control. According to official data, the water level in 609 rivers has exceeded critical marks. This figure is 35% higher than the average for the same period over the last five years. In total, 25 major floods have been recorded in key river systems.
Particular concern is caused by the indicators on small and medium rivers. The water level in 97 such waterways has exceeded the calculated safe flood level. In 14 of them, the highest water level since the beginning of meteorological data collection has been recorded. Experts predict that both in northern and southern China, more precipitation will fall than usual, which will exacerbate the situation.
Typhoon in the northeast
The northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning faced a powerful blow from Typhoon "Ba Vi". The storm brought torrential rains, causing a rapid rise in river levels and flooding in many settlements.
Local authorities are working in emergency mode. The following measures are being carried out urgently:
- Evacuation of tens of thousands of residents from risk zones.
- Pumping floodwaters from flooded areas.
- Disinfection of areas affected by flooding.
- Restoration of power supply and infrastructure.
- Urgent humanitarian aid to victims.
Tragedy in Chongqing
In the southwest of the country, in the city of Chongqing, the aftermath of torrential rains led to tragic consequences. In Pengshui County, a serious landslide occurred, caused by soil saturation and steep mountainous terrain.
As a result of the landslide, eight people died, and another 34 are missing. Rescue services are actively searching for victims under the rubble. Due to the threat of secondary disasters, authorities were forced to urgently evacuate more than 1,100 people from the danger zone. The situation remains tense, as moisture-saturated soil in mountainous areas is extremely unstable.
