In space, at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers, hangs a device that stumps leading global experts. Almost three years ago, China launched a unique radar satellite, Ludi Tance 4-01, capable of scanning nearly a third of the planet's surface around the clock. What seemed impossible for American engineers became a reality thanks to one trick: Beijing is leveraging its global monopoly on a critical semiconductor material.

Technological breakthrough in geosynchronous orbit

The Ludi Tance 4-01 satellite is the first and currently the only device in the world with a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) operating in a geosynchronous orbit. Unlike conventional satellites that orbit at an altitude of about 600 kilometers and only periodically fly over a specific point, this device is fixed over the same zone. It provides continuous coverage of the Asia-Pacific region.

However, physics dictates its own conditions: the farther the satellite, the weaker the signal. To overcome the huge distance and obtain clear images, the device requires colossal energy. Ludi Tance 4-01 solves this problem using solid-state amplifiers operating on gallium nitride semiconductors. Each amplifier outputs 800 watts, and the total system power reaches 18,000 watts. This allows the satellite to generate powerful electromagnetic waves capable of penetrating clouds and darkness over vast distances.

The Gallium Trap

The secret to success lies not only in engineering but also in geopolitics. Gallium nitride is a key component for such powerful systems, but mining gallium is fraught with difficulties. This metal is a by-product of aluminum production. China, being the world's largest aluminum producer, effectively controls 95% of the world's gallium reserves.

In August 2023, exactly a month before the satellite launch, Beijing introduced strict export restrictions on gallium. This decision put Western countries in a difficult position: Chinese engineers gained access to unlimited resources to create a breakthrough technology, while American researchers faced a raw material shortage and cannot reproduce a similar project.

Civilian tasks or military tool?

Officially, China states that Ludi Tance 4-01 is intended for peaceful purposes: meteorology, agricultural monitoring, and emergency response. However, the Pentagon does not share Beijing's optimism. American military experts are convinced that the capabilities of round-the-clock observation over such a vast territory have direct defense applications. For now, Ludi Tance 4-01 remains the unrivaled leader in its class, and the situation is likely to persist for a long time.
