On the night of September 7, 2026, Russian occupation forces carried out a drone attack on the City Mall shopping center in Zaporizhzhia. According to eyewitnesses and rescue services, around 00:30 three 'Shahed' strike drones hit the building. As a result of the impacts, a large-scale fire broke out inside the shopping complex, requiring the deployment of significant State Emergency Service (SES) resources.

Scale of the Damage and the Work of the Rescuers

As reported by the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations, six fire outbreaks totaling approximately 700 square meters arose in the shopping center after the drones hit. One of the first to speak about the aftermath of the attack was Vladimir, a City Mall employee and a displaced person from Huliaipole. According to him, three 'Shaheds' arrived at half past midnight, after which firefighters immediately rushed to the scene to put out the fire. The man noted that after moving from his hometown of Huliaipole to the regional center, he had once again found himself in a risk zone due to the systematic Russian shelling. 'And that's it. You can see for yourself,' he summed up, pointing to the destruction inside the building.

Goods That Could Not Be Retrieved in Time

What makes the situation particularly acute is the fact that, due to the regular air-raid alerts and the strict ban on staying inside buildings during the danger, local entrepreneurs had no opportunity to retrieve their goods from their stores. After the latest drone arrival and the ensuing fire, the shop owners in City Mall do not know whether they will be able to resume work in the near future or what condition their surviving property is in. In essence, the strike on an already suspended shopping center turned a potential risk into direct material losses for dozens of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs.

Context: Suspension of Operations and Strikes on Civilian Objects

It is worth recalling that on September 2, 2026, the City Mall shopping center, managed by the company Arricano, announced a temporary suspension of operations until the end of September due to the current security situation. The company explained this decision by a significant increase on the part of the Russian Federation in the number of strikes on civilian objects, including shopping complexes, over the past month. A separate factor, according to Arricano's representatives, was the strike on the 'Epitsentr' hypermarket located right next to City Mall in Zaporizhzhia. Thus, the night attack of September 7 was not the first direct hit on the infrastructure associated with this shopping cluster.
