The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv has concluded the consideration of the high-profile criminal case and delivered its verdict regarding 20-year-old Viacheslav Zinchenko, who is accused of murdering the prominent Ukrainian linguist and public figure Irina Farion. The tragedy, which shocked Ukrainian society, reached its logical continuation in the courtroom, where the decision in the case followed by the entire country was announced under heightened security measures.
Chronology of the Trial and Charges
Viacheslav Zinchenko was charged with premeditated murder motivated by national intolerance, as well as illegal handling of weapons. Throughout the trial, the defendant consistently pleaded not guilty. Court proceedings in the Shevchenkivskyi Court began in January 2025, turning into a large-scale process: during this time, 30 volumes of case files were examined, and more than 80 court sessions were held, which were often accompanied by procedural delays, changes of lawyers, and motions for judicial disqualification.
Public Resonance and Positions of the Parties
During the verdict announcement, a large-scale rally took place outside the courthouse. Gathered citizens demanded a life sentence for the defendant, chanting slogans and holding posters reading "Zinchenko for Life." The state prosecution insisted on a similar punishment, a demand fully supported by the victim’s daughter, Sofia Osoba, who emphasized that while this would not bring her mother back, it would serve as an act of ultimate justice. Court debates concluded on September 17, after which the defendant waived his right to a final statement.
Investigation Materials and Personal Notes
During the court hearings, prosecutors read out the defendant's personal notes, which, according to investigators, detailed the plan for the crime and subsequent escape. The notes included quotes stating that he allegedly acted out of personal animosity and considered himself a "sanitizer of society." It is worth recalling that the attack on Irina Farion took place on the evening of July 19, 2024, in Lviv, after which she died in the hospital, and the suspect was detained in Dnipro at the end of the same month.
Contradictory Data
During the investigation and court hearings, certain discrepancies arose regarding the motives and statements of the defendant. Thus, in August 2025, Viacheslav Zinchenko stated in court that his words to a cellmate, which effectively amounted to a confession of murder, were taken out of context and spoken under psychological pressure. Nevertheless, the prosecution presented the court with a substantial body of evidence, including ballistics expertise and witness testimony, which formed the basis of the final verdict.
