Following a large-scale investigation and trial in the high-profile murder case of prominent Ukrainian linguist and public figure Iryna Farion, law enforcement agencies have failed to establish the existence of any masterminds or accomplices. This was officially stated by Deputy Head of the National Police of Ukraine Andriy Nebytov during the national telethon "United News," summarizing months of meticulous work by operational services and investigative teams.

Results of a two-year investigation

As Andriy Nebytov emphasized, the National Police, together with the Prosecutor General's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine, conducted a colossal amount of work over the past two years since this high-profile crime was committed. The court fully confirmed the investigation's findings that the accused, Vyacheslav Zinchenko, acted entirely on his own accord and was guided purely by personal convictions. The main motive for committing this grave crime was his deep hostile attitude towards Iryna Farion's public and political activities.

Comprehensive evidence base and expert examinations

During the complex pre-trial investigation, Ukrainian law enforcement officers carried out an unprecedented set of operational and investigative measures. A total of 92 various forensic examinations were conducted, over 1,500 witnesses were interrogated, and dozens of gigabytes of video data from hundreds of CCTV cameras across the country were thoroughly processed. Despite the fact that the accused exercised his legal right and pleaded not guilty, the court handed down a strict verdict based on a solid combination of irrefutable material evidence.

Controversial data

It is worth noting that during the investigation and court sessions, conflicting points and various versions repeatedly surfaced. Initially, law enforcement officers and experts actively considered the version of a possible "Russian trace" and the presence of external organizers. In addition, in August 2025, defendant Vyacheslav Zinchenko stated in court that his early words to a cellmate about the details of the murder were uttered under pressure, although audio recordings directly mentioned personal animosity. Nevertheless, the final verdict of the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv dated October 1, 2026, sentenced 20-year-old Zinchenko to life imprisonment without confirming the involvement of any external masterminds.

Chronology of the tragedy and verdict

To recap, the tragic event occurred on the evening of July 19, 2024, in Lviv, when an unknown assailant shot Iryna Farion, resulting in her death at the hospital. Farewell ceremonies took place on July 23, and on July 25, suspect Vyacheslav Zinchenko was detained in Dnipro. The final point in the trial was the court's decision on life imprisonment for the perpetrator, closing this chapter of the high-profile case, although public discussions around it continue.
