The Croatian government has decided to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus from using any national symbols during the 2026 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships. This decision has been officially supported by the leadership of European Gymnastics.
Strict stance by the organizers
Previously, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and European Gymnastics lifted restrictions on representatives from Russia and Belarus following recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, the Croatian government, acting as the host of the continental championship, has taken a firm stance. The country's authorities refused to allow athletes from aggressor states unless they strictly adhere to a neutral status.
Support from European Gymnastics
European Gymnastics decided not to pressure the Croatian side and fully agreed with the requirements presented. The organization confirmed that it shares the host country's position regarding the ban on flags, anthems, and other state symbols of the Russian Federation and Belarus.
