On August 18, 2026, the Kharkiv region became the scene of a tragedy that once again reminded the world of the brutality of the ongoing conflict. In the morning, a powerful explosion rocked the settlement of Pechenihy: Russian forces launched a missile strike on a peaceful intersection where a post office, shops, and residential houses are located. According to the latest data, at least ten people were killed in the attack, and another 17 were injured with varying degrees of severity. Rescuers, medical personnel, and investigative teams are working at the scene.

Attack Details: "Banderol" Strike on the Settlement Center

Oleh Synehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, confirmed that the occupiers used two small cruise missiles called "Banderol". These munitions, known for their high precision and ability to hit specific targets, were directed at a densely populated area. As a result of the strike, private homes, a cafe, a post office, a shop, and several cars were damaged. Rescuers extinguished the fire that arose after the explosion, however, all emergency services, including search teams and psychologists, continue to work at the scene.

President's Reaction: "We Will Definitely Respond"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike "cruel" and stated that it will not go without consequences for Moscow. "We will definitely respond to this Russian strike. And it is no less important that partners also supplement our fair kinetic responses with their steps in pressuring Russia and supporting Ukraine," he emphasized in his address. Zelenskyy also called on the international community to increase pressure on the Kremlin to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.

Contradictory Data

While official sources report ten deaths, some local activists and volunteers indicate that the number of victims could be higher, as some people may have been buried under rubble or not found in the first hours after the attack. Furthermore, there are discrepancies in the estimates of the number of injured: some sources name 17 people, others — up to 25. These contradictions require further investigation and clarification of data.

Context: Large-Scale Drone Attack at Night

The strike on Pechenihy occurred against the backdrop of a large-scale attack that Russia launched on Ukraine on the night of August 18. The enemy directed more than 140 unmanned aerial vehicles at the country, including "Shahed" and "Gerbera" strike drones and "Parody" decoy drones. The attack was carried out simultaneously in six directions. Air defense forces shot down or suppressed 111 enemy drones, however, hits were recorded at 19 locations. This indicates that the Russian side continues to use combined tactics to overcome Ukrainian defense systems.

Criminal Proceedings and International Resonance

A criminal case has been opened regarding the attack under the article on war crimes resulting in death. Investigators are gathering evidence to transfer it to the International Criminal Court. The international community has already begun to express condolences and condemn Russia's actions. The EU and the US called for an immediate cessation of attacks on civilian objects and an increase in sanctions against Russian military personnel and officials responsible for these crimes.
