As part of urgent military aid, Denmark has sent over 50,000 rounds of 20mm ammunition for F-16 fighter jet onboard cannons to Ukraine. The delivery was arranged on an accelerated basis to strengthen the capabilities of Ukraine's air defense amid regular aerial attacks. The received shells have already been handed over to Ukrainian pilots and are being actively used to intercept and destroy Russian jet-powered attack UAVs in the country's airspace.
Strengthening Air Defense
Representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine emphasized that the prompt delivery of ammunition is of critical importance for protecting the civilian population and critical infrastructure. To date, Western F-16 fighter jets have proven their effectiveness in countering high-speed aerial targets, including jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. Maintaining a high interception efficiency requires constant and stable reserves of specialized weaponry.
The defense agency noted that the Danish side promptly responded to the needs of the Ukrainian forces. The transfer of over 50,000 shells significantly reduces the risks associated with new aerial threats and ensures the combat readiness of flight personnel during daily interception tasks.
Jet Drone Deployment Tactics
The end of summer and September 2026 became a serious test for the Ukrainian capital and other regions due to the massive use of new jet drones. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, Russian forces launch such devices in waves to exhaust air defense resources and create constant psychological pressure on city residents.
Despite the enemy's complex tactics, Ukrainian air defense forces have significantly increased the effectiveness of repelling raids over Kyiv. While the successful interception rate of aerial targets was about 57% in September, this figure subsequently rose to over 80%, largely facilitated by the use of fighter aviation.
Significance of Deliveries and Prospects
Timely support from international partners, particularly Denmark, allows Ukraine to maintain the initiative in the sky and adapt to changing aerial warfare technologies. The use of F-16 onboard cannons has proven to be an economically and tactically justified solution in combating jet drones, which have high flight speeds and are harder to destroy with traditional anti-aircraft means.
Further supplies of ammunition and the expansion of logistical support from allies will ensure the stable operation of Ukrainian aviation. This will not only preserve the achieved interception rates of aerial targets but also minimize the consequences of potential massive attacks in the future.
