Oleh Doroshchuk, the world ranking leader in the high jump and one of the main favorites of the season, failed to claim a medal at the prestigious Diamond League meet held in Silesia, Poland. The Ukrainian athlete stopped at 2.22 m and ultimately finished fifth, sharing the place with American Wilson Vasquez. According to Sport RBC.UA, citing the broadcast of the competition on Suspilne Sport, this performance marked Doroshchuk's first start outside the top three in a long time.
The Start and the Decisive Heights
Doroshchuk approached the Silesia meet as one of the main contenders for victory and, according to reports, was eager to take revenge on Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi for his defeat at the 2026 European Championships. The Ukrainian's start was confident: he cleared the opening heights without error and made his way up to 2.22 m. However, the decisive bar was 2.26 m — it would not yield to Doroshchuk, and it was at this mark that his attempt was halted.
The Meet's Podium
Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi took victory in the sector with a mark of 2.31 m. The silver medal went to Jamaica's Romain Vekford (2.29 m), while bronze was claimed by Poland's Mateusz Kolodziejski, who cleared 2.26 m with fewer attempts than Doroshchuk. It was precisely this difference in attempts at the 2.26 m height that determined the Ukrainian would remain outside the podium, taking fifth place.
The End of a Nine-Podium Streak
The performance in Silesia broke the Ukrainian athlete's impressive streak. In recent years Doroshchuk has consistently won medals at Diamond League meets: the last time he finished off the podium was during his debut in Rome in 2020. Since then, the Ukrainian has stringed together nine consecutive podiums, including gold in Brussels (2025) and Monaco (2026). The fifth place in Poland marked the first break in this chain in the current cycle of competitions.
Ukrainian Women — Already on Sunday
The competition day in Silesia continues: already on Sunday, August 23, the Ukrainian women will take to the high jump sector. Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Iryna Gerashchenko and Yulia Levchenko will begin their competition at 16:02 Kyiv time. Earlier at this same meet, another Ukrainian track and field athlete, Artur Felfner, posted his worst performance of the season.
