Prominent Russian film director and vocal supporter of Kremlin policies Nikita Mikhalkov has made another odious statement justifying Russia's full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine. According to him, the war unleashed by Moscow was allegedly 'sent' by higher powers to force Russians to reconsider their life priorities and values.
Religious Rhetoric to Justify Aggression
In an interview with Russian propaganda media, Mikhalkov attempted to philosophize about current events, utilizing religious motifs to legitimize military actions. He stated that modern society's pursuit of comfort and pleasure carries the threat of spiritual degradation, and the war itself should serve as a sobering factor.
"I understand that this phrase is quite strange, but the Lord sent us the 'SVO' so that we would come to our senses, so that we would understand what true values are and what they look like," sources quote the propagandist. At the same time, the director traditionally remained silent about who exactly unleashed the bloody conflict and what humanitarian catastrophe lies behind these words.
Sanctions and Systemic Support for the Kremlin
It is worth noting that Mikhalkov's public support for Russian aggression has been systemic since the first days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Previously, he repeatedly echoed state propaganda talking points, attempting to portray military actions as a civilizational confrontation.
In response to such anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, back in January 2023, Ukrainian authorities imposed personal sanctions against the director. He was included in restrictive lists alongside other Russian cultural figures who openly supported the armed attack.
Contradictory Data
While some Russian media outlets present Mikhalkov's statements as a profound philosophical revelation regarding the spiritual revival of the nation, independent observers and Ukrainian media qualify these statements as cynical military propaganda. Such rhetoric is designed to disguise the true causes and scale of the aggression by shifting responsibility for human casualties onto abstract metaphysical categories.
