The dollar exchange rate in Ukraine has once again approached an important psychological mark — 45 hryvnias. However, the situation in the currency market is not uniform: the price of the "greenback" can vary significantly depending on where exactly you buy it. The difference between the cash desks of state banks, mobile apps, card transactions, and regular exchange offices can amount to several hryvnias per unit of currency.

Rate Spread: From Banks to Exchange Offices

According to data from the Minfin portal as of July 21, the average buying rate for the dollar in the banking sector is holding at 44.93 hryvnias. This figure is just a step away from the round number that traditionally sparks increased interest among the public and investors.

At the same time, in the exchange office market, the average cost of the dollar turned out to be lower — 44.75 hryvnias. This difference creates a noticeable financial gap for those planning to make large currency purchases.

Comparing Conditions in Major Banks

Leading financial institutions in the country offer different conditions depending on the sales channel. PrivatBank, for example, sells dollars in physical cash desks at a rate of 44.90 hryvnias. However, for those who prefer to conduct transactions via card, the cost of currency is higher — 45.04 hryvnias.

Oschadbank offers more attractive conditions for users of digital services. In the mobile app, the selling rate is 44.90 hryvnias, while for card transactions it is rounded to 45 hryvnias.

The Math of Profit: How Much to Overpay for $100

To visually demonstrate the price difference, one can calculate the cost of acquiring $100 USD at various points of sale:

  • Exchange offices (most profitable option): At an average rate of 44.75 hryvnias, the amount will be 4,475 hryvnias.
  • Oschadbank (mobile app) and PrivatBank cash desks: At a rate of 44.90 hryvnias, you will have to pay 4,490 hryvnias.
  • Average rate across banks: At a rate of 44.93 hryvnias, the amount will rise to 4,493 hryvnias.
  • Card transactions in Oschadbank: At a rate of 45.00 hryvnias, the cost will be 4,500 hryvnias.
  • Card transactions in PrivatBank (most expensive option): At a rate of 45.04 hryvnias, $100 will cost 4,504 hryvnias.

Thus, the difference between the most profitable option at an exchange office and the most expensive card transaction at a major bank reaches 29 hryvnias for every $100. For large sums, this difference can become significant.
