Kyiv residents are facing a new wave of price increases for urban transport. While the cost of riding municipal transport rose in mid-July, the price hike has now extended to private carriers as of August 1. Kyivites will now have to reconsider their budget for daily commutes.
Marshrutka fares doubled
The most significant changes have occurred in the marshrutka (minibus taxi) sector. The fare, which previously cost 10 UAH, has now doubled to 20 UAH per ride. For routes where the tariff was higher at 20 UAH, the price has increased to 25 UAH.
Ihor Moiseienko, head of the "Association of Carriers of Kyiv and Kyiv Region," explained the reasons for such a sharp price jump. According to him, carriers had planned to raise tariffs as early as July 15 but held back to avoid hitting passengers twice in a short period. However, over the last half-month, the situation changed: fuel costs rose by 15 UAH, making the old tariffs economically unviable.
New tariffs in municipal transport
In municipal urban transport (metro, buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the funicular), a single ticket now costs 30 UAH. For those who use transport regularly, a discount system applies when purchasing monthly travel packages.
Kyivites can also purchase monthly passes with a limited number of rides. An unlimited monthly pass for all types of municipal transport will cost 3,656 UAH.
Preservation of benefits
Despite the price increase, city authorities have maintained all established benefits for travel on municipal transport. In particular, students continue to ride for free during the academic year. During summer holidays, a discount applies for schoolchildren: they pay only 25% of the ticket price.
