Ukraine's fourth racket and world number 44 Yuliia Starodubtseva has completed her performance at the prestigious WTA 1000 series tournament in Wuhan, China. In a tense first-round match, the Ukrainian tennis player lost to American Katy McNally, who ranks 70th in the world rankings. This three-hour match became a real test for fans' nerves and unfolded in a dramatic scenario where victory was close but slipped away at the most crucial moment.
Match flow and missed advantage
The beginning of the match went exclusively in favor of the Ukrainian athlete. Yuliia Starodubtseva confidently controlled the game from the baseline, making an impressive run of four consecutive games won at the end of the first set, which she closed securely at 6:2. However, in the second set, the American tennis player restructured her tactics, imposed a fight, and managed to level the score by winning the tie-break 7:2. It seemed that the psychological advantage passed to her opponent, but Starodubtseva showed character at the start of the decisive set.
In the third set, Yuliia seized the initiative and took a comfortable 4:1 lead, being just a few steps away from overall victory. The turning point of the confrontation was a protracted seventh game on the Ukrainian's serve. Despite the fact that Starodubtseva heroically saved six break points, she failed to keep the gained advantage. Sensing momentum, McNally won five games in a row and snatched the final victory in the match with a score of 2:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:4.
Head-to-head statistics and tournament context
This was already the second face-to-face confrontation between the opponents in their professional careers. Unfortunately for Ukrainian fans, the head-to-head statistics remained with the American athlete, who also celebrated success in their previous match. It is worth noting that Katy McNally previously demonstrated high results at tournaments of the highest level, including successful performances on the courts of prestigious majors.
Position of Ukrainian players at the Wuhan tournament
Starodubtseva's defeat became the second loss for the Ukrainian delegation at the start of the competition in Wuhan — earlier Angelina Kalinina stopped fighting for the trophy. Nevertheless, the struggle continues. Other Ukrainian tennis players are continuing their performances in the tournament: Daria Snigur and Dayana Yastremska begin their path from the first round, while team leaders Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk will start directly from the second round of the competition.
