On the evening of July 24, the Sumy region became the target of a large-scale attack by Russian forces. In the city of Sumy, drone strikes on civilian infrastructure objects were recorded, resulting in casualties and significant destruction.
Timeline of events and initial data
The air raid alarm sounded in the city at approximately 23:09. Oleg Hryhorov, Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration (RMA), reported the start of the drone attack in his Telegram channel. According to him, Russian forces used loitering munitions to strike a civilian infrastructure object.
The initial assessment of the consequences was shocking: damaged warehouses and vehicles were found at the scene. Within the first minutes, it was reported that one person had died and others were injured.
Rising number of casualties and fire outbreaks
About half an hour later, Artem Kobzar, the Acting Mayor of Sumy, released updated figures. The number of fatalities rose to two people. It was also confirmed that three civilians were injured.
The attack covered several districts of the city. In the Zarechne district, the strike hit an infrastructure object. The situation in the Kopyakov district was critical: Russian drones attacked the roof of an apartment building and a local gas station. As a result of the hit on the gas station, a fire broke out.
Destruction and emergency services operations
In addition to residential buildings and the gas station, commercial objects were also targeted. Serhiy Kryvoshchenko, Head of the Sumy City Military Administration, reported a hit on the roof of one of the supermarkets.
