Extended power outages turn everyday life into a logistical challenge: refrigerators stop working, stoves won't turn on, and pantry reserves become useless if cooking requires heat or water. That is why creating a home reserve of long-shelf-life foods is no longer optional—it is a necessity. In a Facebook post, Dr. Oleg Shvets provided comprehensive recommendations on which foods to stockpile, how to create full meals without a stove, and how to properly store drinking water when water supplies might be disrupted simultaneously with electricity.
The Principle of Stockpiling: Not Volume, But Usability
Shvets emphasizes that the supply must cover the family's needs for at least several days. The key selection criteria are not just the expiration date, but also the nutritional value and, most importantly, the ability to consume the food without thermal processing or access to clean water for preparation. The expert advises against bulk buying on an industrial scale, suggesting instead a set of familiar foods that family members will actually eat. The reserve should be kept in a dry, cool place, and the storage system should follow a rotation principle: use older items first and only then add new ones, regularly checking expiration dates.
Canned Goods: Complete Protein and Carbs Without a Refrigerator
The doctor pays special attention to canned goods. In terms of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and certain minerals, they are comparable to fresh alternatives and can form the basis of a balanced diet when access to fresh food is limited. However, a long shelf life does not automatically make canned foods healthy: Shvets recommends reading labels carefully and paying attention to the amount of salt, added sugar, and saturated fats. If canned vegetables or legumes are in a salty brine, it can be drained, and the product rinsed with clean water. To add variety, the expert suggests keeping dried herbs and spices on hand, as they do not require refrigeration and will not spoil during a blackout.
Three Stove-Free and Boiling-Water-Free Meals
Even a modest stockpile can yield several complete combinations that require no heating. The first is crispbread with peanut butter and fruit puree: crispbreads provide carbohydrates, peanut butter supplies fats and plant-based protein, and puree adds vitamins. The second is canned beans combined with canned vegetables and crackers instead of bread; none of the components require additional preparation. The third is canned fish (sardines, mackerel, or tuna) with long-shelf-life bread: a simple combination providing both protein and carbohydrates. Shvets specifically warns against using cans with bulging lids, damaged seams, or leaks, as such products pose health hazards.
Water: The Vital Resource That Cannot Be Underestimated
According to the doctor, drinking water is just as important a part of the supply as food. An adult's approximate daily fluid requirement is 1.5–2.5 liters, but for emergency situations, Shvets recommends budgeting 3 liters of drinking water per person per day. This is strictly drinking water: cooking, dishwashing, and personal hygiene require additional volumes that should be calculated separately. Water must be stored in clean, tightly sealed food-grade containers, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Additionally, the expert warns that once opened, milk, vegetable purees, and other perishables should not be left at room temperature for long if the refrigerator is not working.
Accounting for Individual Family Needs
When building a stockpile, it is essential to consider the family's composition and each member's dietary needs. Young children, people with food allergies, or those on special diets will require specific items that may not overlap with the "adult" set. Shvets emphasizes the core principle: the stockpile must genuinely be usable without electricity, rather than just sitting on a shelf for years. A practical test is to try making two or three meals from the available products without turning on the stove, microwave, or refrigerator. If this is easy to do, the reserve has been assembled correctly.
