A critical sanitary and epidemiological situation has emerged in the Irkutsk Oblast of the Russian Federation after a 28-year-old female lab technician died from pneumonic plague. The tragedy struck the Siberian Research Anti-Plague Institute, where the deceased was studying the resistance of dangerous bacteria to antibiotics. The incident caused widespread resonance and required the emergency intervention of federal and regional healthcare services to localize a potential outbreak.

Chronology of Events and the Broken Test Tube Theory

According to operational sources, Institute employee Daria Shipilova may have accidentally dropped a test tube containing the live plague pathogen (Yersinia pestis) while performing laboratory work. Following this incident, her health deteriorated rapidly. Despite emergency hospitalization at the Shelekhov District Hospital and the efforts of medical staff, the patient could not be saved, as the pneumonic form of the plague is characterized by an extremely lightning-fast course and high mortality without timely specific treatment.

Emergency Security Measures and Quarantine

In response to the emergency, regional authorities introduced a set of the strictest restrictive measures. The medical facility where the patient was taken and a number of related departments were temporarily closed under strict quarantine. Furthermore, for safety reasons, the educational process at one of the local higher education institutions was promptly transferred to a remote format. About two hundred people who came into contact with the deceased were placed under medical observation and isolation.

Contradictory Data and Official Denials

Contradictory data emerged at the initial stage regarding the possible routes of infection for the lab technician. A number of unofficial telegram channels and media outlets circulated the version that the girl had visited the Republic of Buryatia shortly before her illness, which is a well-known natural focus of the dangerous infection. However, the leadership of the Republic of Buryatia categorically and officially denied these claims, stating that the deceased had not left the Irkutsk Oblast, and the epidemiological situation in Buryatia remains completely stable and controlled.

Expert Assessments and Further Inspections

Currently, specialized Rospotrebnadzor specialists and federal epidemiologists are working at the site, conducting a thorough investigation into compliance with biological safety protocols at the research institute. Initial test results for all citizens quarantined under medical supervision tested negative for plague, which reduces the risks of a large-scale epidemic, but the investigation continues.
