The era of 'dead zones' in mobile communications may come to an end in the coming years. The technology company Sceye has presented a solution capable of radically changing the telecommunications landscape: the creation of stratospheric platforms functioning as airborne base stations. Their main task is to ensure high-quality 5G coverage over vast territories where ground infrastructure is powerless.

A New Vector: From Ground to Stratosphere

Traditional ground cellular infrastructure has strict limitations regarding its range. Building towers in hard-to-reach or remote regions is often economically unfeasible. The modern development vector of the industry is shifting towards the use of airborne and space objects for data relay.

Systems known as HAPS (High-Altitude Platform Systems) play a key role here. These platforms are designed to operate in the stratosphere at altitudes ranging from 18 to 20 kilometers. This is a unique niche: the altitude is almost twice that of passenger airliner flight levels, yet significantly lower than satellite orbits. It is at this level that the platforms can guarantee stable connectivity for wireless network users.

SE2 Technology: Autonomy and Precision

The heart of the Sceye system is the SE2 stratospheric airship. Externally, it resembles a classic aerostat, but its technical purpose is fundamentally different. The platform is about 60 meters long, and its helium-filled hull is made of lightweight, light-reflecting fabric.

The main feature of the SE2 is its ability to maintain a fixed position in the air for years. This is critical for ensuring stable radio coverage of a specific region. The platform is equipped with advanced avionics that constantly monitor air currents, allowing the airship to remain stationary regardless of changing weather conditions and stratospheric winds.

The platform's energy independence is fully autonomous. The upper part of the hull is covered with an array of solar panels. During the day, they accumulate energy, charging batteries that support system operations at night.

Tests and Prospects: From Fire Monitoring to SoftBank

The functionality of the airships goes far beyond simple data transmission. Located in the stratosphere, the platforms can collect and transmit observation data on natural disasters—such as storms or large-scale fires—in real-time.

The 5G signal is transmitted via a special antenna mounted on the lower part of the platform. During testing, Sceye is collaborating with the major provider SoftBank to transmit network data to ground devices.

The success of the concept has already been proven in practice. According to official data, during one of the endurance tests, the SE2 airship was able to maintain a fixed position in the air for 88 hours. The company is now preparing for large-scale pre-commercial test flights and further integration of its platforms into partners' telecommunications networks.
