Ukraine and Hungary have finalized the coordination of compromise amendments to the legislation on the education of national minorities. This step is a critically important element for Ukraine's further advancement on the path of European integration and the removal of long-standing diplomatic barriers in bilateral relations.
Background and expert refinement of the language issue
According to Ukraine's Ambassador to Hungary, Fedir Shandor, on September 22, the specialized expert commission completed detailed work on the text of the amendments. Specialists meticulously verified deadlines, formulations, legal turns, and linguistic features of the Ukrainian and Hungarian languages. The diplomat emphasized that the innovations will affect the rights not only of the Hungarian community, but also of other national minorities living in the country.
Bill registration and parliament plans
The next stage was the introduction of the initiative into the Ukrainian parliament. Bill No. 16119 has already been officially registered in the Verkhovna Rada, designed to finally secure the educational rights of national minorities. According to the ambassador, the document is drafted with such legal precision that no other state, including Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece, will be able to make claims against it. The vote of deputies for this bill is scheduled for October 12 after the completion of work in committees and districts.
Signals of trust and European integration prospects
Commenting on the dynamics of the negotiation process, Fedir Shandor noted that after protracted tension that lasted since 2017, the parties moved to operational cooperation. "Everything is in turbo mode," the diplomat characterized the current pace of rapprochement between Kyiv and Budapest, emphasizing the importance of mutual steps towards each other to strengthen trust and fulfill EU integration criteria.
