In the Hungarian town of Kisombor, located near the Romanian border, a large-scale corn maze covering 4.5 hectares has opened. This year, it is designed with a fairy-tale theme: images of characters from famous stories, a castle, and a unicorn figure have been carved into the field.
The maze as an outdoor 'escape room'
The attraction, created annually by local volunteers, has become a popular spot for family outings and puzzles. Visitors can walk a route of about 2.5 km, but finding the exit from the numerous dead ends is not easy. Organizers compare the maze to a large natural 'escape room' — a place where you don't just walk, but solve tasks and find the right path.
Project history and goals
The history of the corn maze in Kisombor began in 2008. It is created by members of the local historical and regional studies club 'Kiss Maria Hortensia'. The idea was to draw attention to the region, which was facing population decline, and to attract more visitors.
According to the club and project leader Erzsébet Enrész, the main goal of the initiative is to make Kisombor more known among Hungarian and European tourists who love puzzles and unusual routes.
Tourist success and traditions
Every year, this location attracts about 2–3 thousand people who come not only to walk the corn paths but also to participate in traditional dexterity games. The current fairy-tale maze is open to visitors until August 22. Organizers expect it to become one of the main summer tourist destinations in the region.
