On Saturday, August 15, 2026, a powerful wildfire engulfed Nova Dofinovka, a resort suburb of Odesa. Drought, extreme heat, and strong gusts of wind caused a routine ignition of dry grass and reeds in the fields to get out of control. The fire rapidly overcame protective barriers and spread to residential houses, destroying the private sector right before the eyes of local residents.
Firestorm on the coast
Witnesses are posting apocalyptic footage on social media: private residential buildings are completely engulfed in flames, building roofs are collapsing, and thick black smoke has shrouded the entire coastal zone and is clearly visible from Odesa itself. The area of the fire in the open terrain has grown rapidly and has already exceeded several hectares.
The situation is critically exacerbated by the weather — air temperatures in the Odesa region reach +34°C, and the wind drives sparks over concrete fences directly into courtyards, igniting wooden extensions, garages, and dry vegetation on private plots. Local residents are urgently leaving their homes, trying to save documents and pets.
Consequences of attacks and SESC work
In addition to human error and negligence, large-scale fires in the Odesa district are provoked by ongoing hostilities. The night before, the region was subjected to missile strikes, damaging warehouses and causing large smoldering spots on open landscapes. In drought conditions, these factors created an ideal environment for the instantaneous spread of fire.
Right now, an operational headquarters of the State Emergency Service (SESC) has been set up at the scene of the tragedy in Nova Dofinovka. Reinforced fire crews are involved in extinguishing the fire, attempting to localize hotspots in conditions of dense private housing and prevent the detonation of gas cylinders in courtyards. Data on the scale of destruction, as well as information about possible casualties and injured, is being urgently clarified by emergency services.
Contradictory data
At present, there are discrepancies in the assessment of the scale of the disaster. Official representatives of the SECS report a fire area of the ecosystem of more than 5 hectares, however, local residents and witnesses on social media estimate the affected area to be significantly wider, pointing out that the fire has already engulfed dozens of houses. There is also no single version regarding the exact number of evacuated citizens: some sources speak of the complete evacuation of several streets, others — of a partial evacuation of the population.
Emergency services continue to work on site, trying to cut off the fire from the rest of the village. The situation remains critical due to strong winds and high air temperatures, which hinders the work of fire crews.
