Not all horror games scare in the same way. Some force you to run away from monsters, others keep you in constant suspense, and some turn even cute children's drawings into true nightmares. Styler editor Yulia Lyushneva has gathered five PC horror games with unusual plots and fundamentally different visual styles—from muted 2.5D graphics to psychedelic bright decorations that gradually take on ugly forms. Each of these games offers its own way to break the usual perception of fear.

Silver Pines: A Cozy Town Hiding a Nightmare

Silver Pines is a detective horror game released on October 8, 2026. Private investigator Red Walker arrives in a semi-abandoned American town to search for missing musician Eddie Velvet. However, the investigation quickly turns into a nightmare: dangerous creatures and dark secrets hide behind the quiet streets. The player explores abandoned buildings, solves puzzles, looks for supplies, and fights enemies. The game combines survival horror elements with metroidvania mechanics, while the hand-drawn 2.5D graphics and muted color palette create a mystical atmosphere. According to the Styler editor, it is precisely the combination of visual style and mystery that proved most memorable: at first glance, the town seems ordinary, even a bit cozy, but something truly dangerous lurks behind its empty streets.

REANIMAL: Fear in the Company of a Friend

REANIMAL is a 2026 horror game from Tarsier Studios, the team behind the first two parts of Little Nightmares. The plot tells of a brother and sister returning to their native island to save missing friends. They are met by destroyed buildings, dark tunnels, and disfigured creatures. The player explores locations, overcomes obstacles, solves puzzles, and hides from pursuers. The story can be played solo or cooperatively—in local or online co-op. A special atmosphere is created by the contrast between the small heroes and the huge monsters. As the compiler notes, joint playthrough changes the very perception of fear: in such a dangerous world, you have to not only save yourself but also help your partner.

Happy Game: Smiles That Scare More Than Monsters

Despite its cheerful name, Happy Game is a psychedelic horror game from 2021 created by the Czech studio Amanita Design, known for Machinarium and Botanicula. The player controls a young boy who enters three creepy dreams. To wake up, he will have to meet strange creatures and solve a series of unusual puzzles. Pink rabbits, smiling faces, and bright decorations gradually take on ugly forms, and the anxious atmosphere is complemented by the unusual soundtrack of the musical duo DVA. According to the Styler editor, the visual style works the strongest here: usually bright colors and smiles are associated with something fun, but in Happy Game everything is the opposite. The most creepy characters turn out to be those who continue to smile even after terrifying transformations.

Still Wakes the Deep: A Dead End on an Oil Rig

The events of Still Wakes the Deep, released in 2024, unfold on the Beira D oil rig near Scotland. Worker Cameron McLeary, nicknamed Caz, finds himself at the epicenter of a catastrophe: the platform is collapsing, communication is lost, and crew members face an incomprehensible supernatural threat. The game features no weapons to fight enemies—players must hide, run, wade through flooded rooms, and navigate damaged structures. The storm, the roaring metal, and creatures with disfigured human bodies create an atmosphere of absolute deadlock. As the author emphasizes, what is terrifying here is not so much the appearance of the monsters as the setting itself: there is only the cold sea all around, structures are collapsing, and there is practically nowhere to escape.

Total Chaos: Every Shot Is Worth Its Weight in Gold

Total Chaos is a 2025 survival horror game set on the abandoned island of Fort Oasis. Once an industrial settlement, it now contains only ruined buildings and dark tunnels. A mysterious voice over the radio guides the hero deep into the island, where reality gradually turns into a nightmare. The player needs to collect resources, craft weapons, and fight ugly creatures. Limited supplies force careful consideration of every fight. Notably, the project initially existed as a Doom II modification and later transformed into a standalone game. According to the Styler editor, it is not enough to simply hide from a monster here—you constantly have to assess risks and decide whether you have enough strength and supplies for the next battle.

Five games, five different approaches to fear: a detective mystery, cooperative survival, psychedelic surrealism, confined space, and resource management. They all share one thing—none of these games let you relax for a single minute.
