In the US, Vigil Autonomy has demonstrated an unusual military camouflage system called Air Cover, which the media has dubbed the "flying carpet." The development is designed to conceal military equipment and infantry from reconnaissance drones and satellites. This is reported by Defense Express.
What is Air Cover?
Air Cover is a special sheet with drones installed at its four corners. In operating mode, the drones lift the canvas above the protected object and hold it in the air, creating a continuous camouflage "roof" over the equipment or personnel. According to Defense Express, the system is capable of concealing not only stationary objects but also moving military vehicles, which fundamentally distinguishes it from traditional camouflage means.
Protection from Optical, Thermal, and Radar Means
The main goal of Air Cover is to limit the detection of equipment not only by ordinary optical cameras, but also in the infrared range and by radar means. In particular, the developers focus on protection against thermal imaging cameras and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Thus, the system is designed to operate against multiple physical observation channels simultaneously.
Mobility and Autonomy
A key practical feature of the development is the ability to operate continuously for up to two hours. This allows Air Cover to be used during the movement of units and equipment. In addition, the system can be used in a stationary position by securing the canvas on several supports when aerial holding is not required.
Limitations and Effectiveness Issues
Defense Express drew attention to a number of limitations. First, Air Cover masks the object only from above, so effectiveness directly depends on the viewing angle: a thermal imaging camera located on the side can still detect the equipment. Second, experts question the practical importance of defense against SAR radars, which are generally used for terrain mapping rather than tracking troop movements. Third, the two-hour autonomy is sufficient only for short-term tasks, and after the batteries discharge, the system will have to be transported on a vehicle or carried by infantry as an additional load.
Development Stage and Prospects
At present, the technical characteristics and full capabilities of Air Cover have not been fully disclosed. Judging by the state of the project, it is likely at an initial stage. According to Defense Express, Air Cover attracts attention as one of the new approaches in military camouflage, but its practical effectiveness, real technical capabilities, and existing limitations may only become clear during future tests.
