The press service of the Holy Dormition Sviatohor Lavra of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has published the findings of a forensic medical examination, according to which a resident of the monastery, monk Varsonofiy (born Vyacheslav Nikolaevych Podyma), died as a result of an attack involving the use of a firearm. The document, issued the day after the body was discovered, classified the death as intentional murder. The incident took place in the Donetsk region on territory under the control of the Ukrainian authorities, in close proximity to the line of separation.
Findings of the forensic medical examination
According to the official expert report, death resulted from a penetrating gunshot wound: the bullet passed through the head and neck, damaging the skull bones. The expert classified the death as the result of an attack with the intent to kill, using a firearm. The monastic community and the monastery's leadership expressed their condolences to the deceased's relatives and appealed to the law enforcement agencies to ensure the transparency and promptness of the investigation.
The Sviatohor Lavra in the front-line zone
The Holy Dormition Sviatohor Lavra is located in the Slavyansk district of the Donetsk region, in close proximity to the line of separation. Since the beginning of the full-scale hostilities, the monastic complex has repeatedly come under artillery shelling, resulting in the destruction of several buildings and sketes. According to international and Ukrainian media, the Lavra remains one of the most vulnerable religious sites in the front-line region, where, in addition to the monastic community, civilians evacuated from areas of active fighting had been staying for a long time.
Progress of the investigation
The National Police of Ukraine, together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), has opened a criminal case under the article providing for liability for intentional murder. According to available information, the investigation is considering several versions of what happened, including the possibility of a sabotage group infiltrating from territory not controlled by Ukrainian forces, as well as internal conflicts and deliberate provocative actions. The identification of the suspects and the establishment of the motives of the crime had not been completed at the time of publication.
Contradictory data
In the initial stage, before the forensic medical examination report was received, a number of informal channels spread speculation that the monk's death could have been linked to an accidental incident or the consequences of hostilities. These versions were refuted by the official expert report, which unambiguously points to the deliberate use of a firearm. At the same time, the final qualification of the circumstances and motives of the crime remains the subject of an ongoing investigation, and no publicly confirmed data on the identity and intentions of the person who carried out the attack have been presented to date.
