The government of Serhiy Koretsky has named the main candidate for the position of Minister of Economy and Ecology. Alexander Kravchenko, Managing Partner of the Ukrainian office of the global consulting giant McKinsey & Company, is being considered for this role. This decision marks the transition of a top-tier international expert into the sphere of public administration at a critical moment for the country.
Professional Path: From Boryspil to London
Alexander Kravchenko was born in 1983 in Boryspil. His academic foundation was laid at the Kyiv National Economic University, after which he obtained an MBA from the prestigious London Business School. Since 2008, he has dedicated himself to international practice, becoming one of the key players in the field of strategic consulting.
Today, Kravchenko holds the position of Managing Partner of the Ukrainian office of McKinsey & Company and leads the Energy & Materials practice in the Central and Eastern Europe region. Over the years, he has consulted more than 20 clients across Europe and the Middle East. His areas of expertise include corporate strategy development, large-scale enterprise transformations, industrial and energy sector development, as well as digitalization and efficiency improvement in the public sector.
Reconstruction Experience and Energy Agenda
With the onset of the full-scale war, the focus of Kravchenko's activities shifted to tasks of national survival and development. He actively participated in projects related to Ukraine's post-war reconstruction, economic modernization, and improving the investment climate. He paid special attention to the development of the energy sector and industry, making his profile highly sought after by the new government.
Outside of his main work, Kravchenko supports the development of Ukrainian education. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) and oversees scholarship programs. In particular, between 2018 and 2020, he funded the education of students in the "Economic Analysis" master's program.
Expert and Colleague Assessment
Kravchenko's candidacy has received support in parliament. Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a deputy from the "Holos" party and Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, who is personally acquainted with the economist and teaches at KSE, assessed the appointment positively.
"This is a person who perfectly understands how business works. He helped prepare materials on Ukraine's reconstruction and worked on preparations for the Lugano conference. I know him personally. This is a person who can, knows how, and, most importantly, knows exactly what he is doing," noted Zheleznyak. The deputy emphasized that the transition of a top manager of this level to public service is a significant victory for the country.
New Structure and Change of Power
Kravchenko's appointment comes against the backdrop of the restructuring of the Cabinet of Ministers. His predecessor in the merged ministry was Oleksiy Sobolev, who headed the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture since November 2025, in the government of Yulia Sviridenko.
In the updated government composition, the sphere of responsibility will be divided: a separate Ministry of Economy and Ecology and a Ministry of Agrarian Policy are being created. In his last interview, Sobolev spoke about plans to reserve critical enterprises, the "National Cashback" program, and privatization. Now, the baton of economic reform is taken over by a specialist with an international background who has remained outside of public politics for many years, focusing on business tasks.
