A cold air mass from the northeast has arrived in Ukraine, bringing nighttime frosts to most regions of the country. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, nighttime temperatures are holding between plus one and plus seven degrees Celsius, while ground frosts ranging from zero to minus three degrees are forecasted in some oblasts.
Meteorological causes of the cold snap
Head of the Media Interaction Department of UkrHMC Natalia Ptakha reported that the synoptic situation is shaped by an anticyclone. Nighttime clearings combined with flows of cool air lead to intensive cooling of the Earth's surface, which in turn cools the lower layers of the atmosphere. Over the weekend of October 3 and 4, 2026, local air frosts are even possible in the mountainous and foothill areas of Prykarpattya.
Heat islands in megacities
Nevertheless, the cold will not affect all settlements. As meteorologists note, large cities form so-called "heat islands" where ground frosts are not expected. This phenomenon is explained by dense development, an abundance of asphalted and concrete surfaces, and the constant presence of additional technogenic heat sources that accumulate energy throughout the day.

In particular, Kyiv residents can count on milder nighttime temperatures without the risk of ground frosts. Meteorologists emphasize that the urbanized environment significantly smooths out temperature fluctuations, protecting urban ecosystems from sharp autumn frosts that are recorded in open rural areas.
