A high-ranking American military commander has sent an alarming message to the Pentagon regarding a critical shortage of forces to fulfill defense tasks. The Dilemma of Choosing Between US and Israeli Defense

According to the Washington Post, citing sources, the four-star general privately warned the department's leadership. Grynkevich stated that without at least one additional Arleigh Burke-class destroyer equipped with the Aegis multi-mission combat system and Standard SM-3 interceptor missiles, he would be forced to make a choice. He must choose between defending American territory, facilities, citizens, and soldiers, and defending Israel.

The General emphasized that the shortage of missile defense ships affects not only Israel's security but also the United States' own defense needs in the region.

Crisis Causes: Overload and Maintenance

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the missile interceptor destroyers tasked with protecting Israel are overloaded. They are engaged in operations in the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and near Iran. An additional factor reducing the fleet's combat readiness has been maintenance issues.

Sources indicate that after five months of war with Iran, stocks of key American weapons have been depleted. The blockade of Iranian ports and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz dealt the hardest blow to the fleet. This is why General Grynkevich complained about the lack of destroyers ready to defend Israel and requested assistance.

Current Status of US Navy Forces

Currently, the distribution of ships is as follows:

  • Two US Navy destroyers are in the Mediterranean Sea — USS Paul Ignatius and USS Roosevelt.
