Google has released its September update to the Android Drop platform, which includes five significant smartphone innovations. According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the official News From Google channel, the update package covers several key scenarios: managing personal belongings with the help of artificial intelligence, combating motion sickness in transport, improving accessibility for blind users, and expanding messaging capabilities. The update is being rolled out in waves, and different features become available on different system versions, which device owners should keep in mind.
Gemini in Find Hub: finding things without physical tags
The most notable change concerns the Find Hub service, where Google has integrated the Gemini assistant. Users no longer need to buy physical trackers like Pixel Tag or AirTag to avoid losing valuable items. The assistant can remember where a user placed an object — for example, a passport or spare keys — and, when needed, suggest its location. To improve the accuracy of the description, a photo can be attached to the entry. Finding the item later is just as simple: you just need to ask Gemini about it or open the saved items tab in Find Hub. The feature works on devices running Android 16 or newer in countries where Gemini and Find Hub are available.
Motion Assist: protection against motion sickness in transport
A separate feature, Motion Assist, has been developed to combat motion sickness when using a smartphone while on the move. In principle, it is similar to Apple's Vehicle Motion Cues: the system displays moving dots on the screen that are synchronized with the vehicle's movement. This helps the vestibular system adapt to visual perception and reduces discomfort. Users can customize the shape, color, and transparency of the dots, as well as enable the mode automatically or manually via the quick settings panel. Motion Assist will appear on all smartphones running Android 17.
Guided Vision: accessibility for blind and visually impaired users
For people with visual impairments, a Guided Vision mode has been added to Gemini Live. Using the smartphone's camera, artificial intelligence helps navigate space and solve everyday tasks. Notably, the technology is designed for a wide range of devices: it is available starting from Android 9 and newer versions in regions where Gemini works, making it one of the most widely accessible features in this update.
Google Messages: integration with Keep and chat customization
The Google Messages app has received direct integration with the Google Keep service. A corresponding shortcut has appeared in the add-content menu (the plus icon), allowing users to create and edit shared lists — for example, shopping lists or vacation plans — directly within the chat window without switching between apps. In addition, Messages has gained additional customization options: users can set arbitrary images or photos from the gallery as the background for individual chats. Text bubbles automatically adjust their color scheme to match the selected image, although their color can also be set manually.
Version requirements and geographic availability
It is important to note that the features are tied to different system versions: Find Hub with Gemini requires Android 16 or newer, Motion Assist — Android 17, while Guided Vision is available starting from Android 9. In addition, all Gemini-based features work only in regions where the service has been launched. Thus, the full set of innovations will not be available immediately or on all devices, but rather as the corresponding Android versions and Gemini's geographic coverage roll out.
