Kyiv has declared a heightened readiness mode for road infrastructure. On Monday, August 3, temporary restrictions for heavy goods vehicles came into effect in the capital of Ukraine. The decision was made due to abnormally high air temperatures, which threaten the integrity of the road surface.

As reported by RBC-Ukraine citing the Kyiv Patrol Police, the ban is seasonal and will remain in effect until thermometers show a temperature drop below the critical threshold.

Strict ban parameters

Law enforcement officials have clarified the criteria under which vehicles fall under restrictions. A ban on movement on city roads is introduced when the air temperature reaches +28°C and above. The ban applies to trucks meeting the following parameters:

  • The actual mass of the vehicle exceeds 24 tons;
  • The load on one axle is more than 7 tons.

Under extreme heat conditions, asphalt softens, and the passage of heavy vehicles can lead to the formation of tire tracks and deep deformations of the surface, requiring costly repairs.

Where drivers should go

The Patrol Police warned drivers that violating the regime entails administrative liability. However, a backup option is provided for logistics companies. Truck drivers can wait out the peak heat at specially designated temporary parking areas.

Such zones are located in the right-of-way of highways, as well as near road service facilities. This will allow for the preservation of goods and equipment without violating traffic rules.

Temperature records in Ukraine

The restrictions in Kyiv are a response to a nationwide anomaly. Meteorologists recorded new temperature records between July 31 and August 2. Historical maximums were broken in Uzhhorod, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk.

The Kyiv Patrol Police promised to promptly inform the public about the cancellation of restrictions. The corresponding message will appear in the official Telegram channel of the department as soon as the air temperature drops to a safe level.

Recall that seasonal restrictions for heavy transport are standard practice in Ukraine during the summer period. Previously, temporary bans on movement across the Metro Bridge towards the 'Hydropark' station were also introduced in the capital due to repair works, which were scheduled to end on August 3.
