Researchers at Monash University (Australia) have put forward a proposal to radically revise the classification of human ancestors: in their view, all species that lived on Earth over the past 4–5 million years should be merged into a single genus, Homo. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a study published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology. The initiative covers not only the species traditionally assigned to Homo, but also Australopithecus (australopithecines) and Paranthropus (paranthropines), which are currently placed in separate taxonomic groups.
Why the Old Criteria Have Stopped Working
Traditional science depicted human evolution as a clear sequence: from apes through australopithecines to Homo sapiens. However, according to researcher Dr. Ian Touloudis, the accumulated fossil finds and genetic analyses have rendered the current taxonomy ineffective. The key traits once used to define the genus Homo have in fact ceased to be reliable. A large brain is no longer a mandatory criterion — some recognized Homo species had very small brains. The complex use of tools and sophisticated behavior, once considered "human," have also been found in representatives of Paranthropus and Australopithecus. The anatomical and ecological differences previously regarded as fundamental have turned out to be blurred.
Contradictory Data
It is important here to honestly point out the discrepancy in versions. On the one hand, proponents of the new approach argue that merging Australopithecus and Paranthropus under the single name Homo will create a more stable system, relieve scientists of the need to constantly redraw the boundaries of the lineage with each new find, and allow a more accurate description of the complex, non-linear path of human species development. On the other hand, this is merely a scientific proposal, not an established consensus: the traditional taxonomy, which separates these groups, has remained the foundation of anthropology for decades, and abolishing it requires broad recognition by the community. In other words, the "contradiction" here lies not in figures or dates, but in the very approach — a linear model with clear boundaries versus a non-linear model with a single genus — and science has not yet delivered a final verdict.
What This Means for Science
If the proposal gains recognition, the rewritten genus Homo will reflect the modern understanding of evolution: not a ladder, but a bush with many intertwining branches. This will change textbooks and museums, where today australopithecines and paranthropines are presented as separate "steps" on the path to humans. At the same time, the authors emphasize that the goal is not to simplify the picture, but to make it more accurate and resilient to future finds. For now, the initiative remains a subject of scientific discussion, recorded in a peer-reviewed journal.
