Every year on November 19, the world celebrates International Men's Day. In 2026, this date falls on a Thursday. The holiday does not have an official status in Ukraine and does not grant the right to an additional day off, but it remains an occasion to congratulate close ones, friends, and colleagues. We look into where this date came from, what its status is in the calendar, and how it is usually celebrated.

Date and Origin of the Holiday

International Men's Day is celebrated annually on November 19. According to the organizers, the holiday was established in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago at the initiative of Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh. Today, it is celebrated in more than 80 countries worldwide. The main goal of the date is to draw attention to the physical and mental health of men and boys, support responsible fatherhood, and highlight positive role models of male behavior. In 2026, the international theme of the holiday was chosen as "The Future Is Everyone".

Status in Ukraine and the Question of a Day Off

Despite its wide international spread, Men's Day does not have the status of a public holiday in Ukraine. In the Verkhovna Rada's official holiday calendar for 2026, November 19 lists the Glass Maker's Day and the Hydrometeorological Service Worker's Day, while International Men's Day is not included in the list of public holidays. This means that the date can be celebrated at one's own discretion, but it does not provide for special state events or exemption from work.

An additional day off on the occasion of Men's Day is not provided in Ukraine. According to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine, November 19 is not included in the list of festive and non-working days. In addition, during martial law, the provisions of this article regarding festive and non-working days do not apply in accordance with the Law of Ukraine No. 2136-IX. Thus, Thursday, November 19, 2026, remains a regular working day for employees with a standard schedule, although individual employers can independently establish additional rest days in accordance with current rules.

Not to Be Confused with Father's Day

International Men's Day is sometimes confused with Father's Day, although these are different holidays. Men's Day is celebrated on November 19 and is dedicated to men in general, regardless of age, marital status, or the presence of children. In turn, Father's Day in Ukraine has an officially established date — the third Sunday of June, and in 2026 it was celebrated on June 21. This holiday emphasizes the importance of fatherhood, fathers' participation in raising children, and family support. Therefore, in November, you can congratulate not only men who have already become fathers, but also brothers, friends, partners, and colleagues.

Traditions and Theme of 2026

The holiday has no single mandatory traditions. In various countries, educational events, meetings, and campaigns dedicated to the health of men and boys are organized around this date. Special attention is paid to disease prevention, mental well-being, support for fatherhood, and equal relationships in the family. In Ukraine, Men's Day can be celebrated by congratulating loved ones, spending time together, or giving a small gift. The main thing is to remind the men around them that they are valued and supported.
