In August 2026, the space technology market faced another wave of intense competition that escalated into a legal battle over the radio frequency spectrum. Leading satellite operator Iridium filed a complaint with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) against SpaceX's plans to upgrade the Starlink network. SpaceX aims to provide users with gigabit data speeds; however, according to its competitor, implementing this project could create critical interference for Iridium's infrastructure.

Technical Conflict: Mobile vs. Fixed Communication

The core of the dispute lies in the specifics of radio frequency usage. Iridium claims that SpaceX plans to use frequencies for its new ground gateway stations that are historically and legally designated for mobile satellite communication services. In particular, the conflict intensified around SpaceX's application to build a new station in Bastrop, Texas, submitted back in April 2026. Iridium states that the calculation methodology used by SpaceX is based on standards for fixed terrestrial communication, which is unacceptable in this context and poses risks to the operation of their global network.

Scale of SpaceX Infrastructure

Currently, SpaceX successfully manages more than 100 gateway stations in the US, which include over 1,500 antennas. These ground facilities are a critical link ensuring data transmission between Starlink satellites and the global internet network. To transition to the next-generation V3 satellites and achieve the promised gigabit speeds, the company needs to expand this network and upgrade existing nodes, which is causing concern among regulators and competitors.

Negotiation Strategy and Regulator Position

Representatives of Iridium emphasize that the appeal to the FCC was a last resort. The company does not aim for a complete ban on SpaceX's activities but rather seeks to force the competitor into dialogue. A temporary refusal to approve applications for building new stations, according to Iridium, will create the necessary leverage so that the parties can continue negotiations on the joint and safe use of frequencies. SpaceX, in turn, fears that these objections are an attempt to artificially slow down the development of high-speed internet and limit consumer access to new technologies.
