The response to this challenge is the development by Israeli startup Skapion — a next-generation air defense system designed to intercept not individual targets, but entire swarms of UAVs.
A new philosophy of defense: from single targets to swarms
Skapion proposes a radical change in the approach to countering aerial threats. Instead of spending expensive missiles to intercept each drone individually, the new technology treats a cluster of unmanned aircraft as a single target. This approach aims to solve the main problem of modern drone warfare — the economic impracticality of interception: the cost of a missile often exceeds the cost of the UAV itself.
Developers promise that their system will significantly reduce the cost of interception while maintaining high effectiveness against growing threats. This is critical for protecting both military units and critical infrastructure, which is becoming a target for increasingly sophisticated attacks.
Mobility and operation in jamming conditions
The Skapion system is designed with the requirements of modern mobile warfare in mind. It will have a mobile design, allowing it to be flexibly deployed at any point where a threat arises. Moreover, engineers are paying special attention to the system's resistance to electronic jamming. It is expected that the complex will be able to maintain full combat readiness even in conditions of communication signal neutralization, providing troops with flexibility in the most complex combat conditions.
The "Iron Dome" team and massive investments
Behind the project is a team with an impeccable reputation. Many Skapion developers previously worked on the legendary Israeli air defense systems "Iron Dome" and "David's Sling". The company's leadership includes chief architect, Brigadier General Pini Jungman, who was directly involved in the creation of these complexes. CEO Ido Bar-On also has many years of experience working with defense organizations and government agencies around the world.
To accelerate development and bring the system to market, the company raised $36 million in a seed funding round. These funds will be directed towards recruiting highly qualified specialists, deep development and testing of prototypes, as well as developing strategic cooperation with partners in Israel, the US, and other countries.
International scale of the project
Although Skapion's headquarters is located in Washington, USA, the main research center is in Ramat Gan, Israel. The company is actively expanding its staff, attracting experts in electronics, software, autonomous technologies, and the aerospace industry. This testifies to the seriousness of the developers' intentions to create a product capable of changing the rules of the game in the field of air defense.
