The service, named 'Pocket Tips', aims to solve the primary problem faced by travelers: a lack of space in suitcases for souvenirs and purchases.
Operating Principle and Technology Capabilities
A specialized machine performs vacuum and mechanical compression of wardrobe items down to the size of a palm in about one minute. According to the developers, depending on the type of fabric and material density, the device can reduce the original volume of clothing by a maximum of 7 times, freeing up critical luggage space for the return trip.
Testing Results at Aviation Hubs
The innovative development successfully underwent trials between 2025 and 2026 at major Japanese aviation hubs, including Haneda, Narita, Kumamoto, and Naha airports. During large-scale tests involving about 400 volunteers, the technology proved its high efficiency: specifically, at Naha Airport, about 96 percent of users noted a noticeable clothing compression result.
Prospects for Commercial Launch in 2027
In September 2026, the developer company S-JOY, together with the 'terminal.0 HANEDA' innovation center at Haneda Airport, announced the launch of a joint project to prepare for the full-scale commercial implementation of the technology.
