The night of July 16 marked a new wave of aggression for Kharkiv. Russian forces launched a massive attack on the city using unmanned aerial vehicles. As a result of the shelling, buildings and infrastructure in several administrative districts were damaged.
Information regarding the scale of the attack came from Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, whose social media posts became the primary source of data for local and international media, including RBK-Ukraine.
Attack Timeline
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the threat emerged in the pre-dawn hours. Around 00:52, air defense systems detected entire groups of Russian drones moving towards Kharkiv. Immediately after this, a series of powerful explosions was heard in the city.
According to witness accounts and local community data, explosions were heard continuously for approximately five minutes. This indicates a coordinated nature of the strike and the simultaneous use of a large quantity of munitions.
Hit Areas
Ihor Terekhov clarified that preliminary data indicates "Shahed" strikes in three key districts of the city: Kyivskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Nemyshlianytskyi. However, by 01:50 AM, details of the consequences were confirmed in only two of them.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the strike hit the territory of one of the city parks. As a result of the explosion, the following were damaged:
- The cinema building;
- The parking area;
- Tennis courts.
Another hit was recorded at a garage cooperative in the same district. Preliminary data suggests that an enemy projectile struck the building. All relevant services, including firefighters and rescue workers, are currently working at the scene.
Consequences of the attack were also recorded in the Nemyshlianytskyi district, although specific details of the damage have not yet been disclosed. The situation in the Kyivskyi district remains unclear — there is currently no official confirmation of hits in this sector of the city.
Response and Consequences
Local authorities continue to gather information on casualties and the scale of destruction. All emergency services are operating in an enhanced mode. Residents are advised to follow safety rules and remain in shelters until the air raid alarm is lifted.
The attack on Kharkiv on the night of July 16 was another episode in a series of regular strikes on Ukrainian cities. It demonstrates that Russia continues to use drones as a primary tool for damaging civilian infrastructure and creating psychological pressure on the population.
