In Kiev, following the launch of a differentiated air-threat alert system, several major theaters have revised their operating procedures during air raids. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing official statements from the cultural institutions themselves. The changes affect the Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre, the Left Bank Drama and Comedy Theatre on the Dnipro, the Kiev Opera, and the Young Theatre. All of the aforementioned venues confirmed that when a 'yellow' threat level is declared, performances will continue as usual, and audiences are free to remain in the hall, in the building, or on the theater's premises at their own discretion.
Rules for Audiences: Ticket Exchanges and Registering Departure
The key innovation concerns the procedure an audience member must follow when deciding to leave the theater during a 'yellow' alert. According to theater representatives, departure must be registered with the duty administrator. After this procedure, the ticket becomes eligible for exchange for another performance or a different date. If the 'yellow' level is declared before the start of the show, the performance will take place on the regular schedule without any restrictions. Thus, for most audience members, the format of attending the theater during a 'yellow' alert will remain virtually unchanged.
Exceptions and Nuances: The Kiev Opera and the Franko Theatre
At the same time, the Kiev Opera made a caveat: during an alert, management will monitor the situation directly. If a specific threat arises for the Podil district, where the theater is located, the performance may be suspended even at the 'yellow' level. The Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre also announced that it will not stop performances during the 'yellow' danger level; however, its statement contains no information about the possibility of exchanging a ticket if an audience member leaves the hall voluntarily. This creates a certain degree of uncertainty for the audience of this theater.
'Red' Level: Full Stop and Move to Shelter
When a 'red' threat level is declared, the rules become strict: the performance is stopped, and audience members are asked to move to the nearest shelter. After the alert is lifted or the level is downgraded to 'yellow,' the show may be resumed. A reminder that the 'yellow' level means 'drone danger,' while the 'red' level means 'massive drone threat,' 'missile threat,' or 'missile-and-drone threat,' underscores that, under a 'yellow' signal, the continued operation of enterprises and institutions is explicitly provided for by a Cabinet of Ministers decree.
Context: The Cabinet Decree and the Launch of the New System
The changes in theater operations are a direct consequence of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Decree No. 1092, 'On Certain Issues of Optimizing the Protection of the Population and Responding to Threats from Aerial Attack Means,' adopted on September 4, 2026. On September 6, a differentiated alert system began operating in Kiev, dividing air raids into two levels. At the 'yellow' level, enterprises, institutions, and organizations may continue their work. Not all Kiev theaters have already publicly stated their format: the Theatre on Podil previously only reported the presence of a lobby shelter in the building, while the Young Audience Theatre did not clarify its operating procedure, although a few days ago it offered to exchange tickets for a performance that did not take place due to prolonged alerts.
