A new patent dispute with multimillion-dollar consequences is unfolding in the high-tech sector. A jury in Waco, Texas, USA, has delivered a verdict stating that Japanese memory chip manufacturer Kioxia must pay satellite communications operator Viasat compensation amounting to $229 million.
The Core of the Conflict: From Satellites to Flash Memory
The cause of the legal proceedings was a technology originally developed for the space industry. Viasat, based in Carlsbad, California, claims to have created unique mechanisms for improving flash memory. These developments were necessary for designing error correction systems for satellites, where reliability and energy efficiency play a critical role.
The essence of the patented technology lies in the method of storing data on transistors using electrical charges. Viasat proved in court that Kioxia devices use a similar error correction algorithm that functions identically to the satellite operator's patented solution.
