Ukrainian defender Yukhym Konoplya has played his first official match for Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Bundesliga. His team secured a 3-2 home victory against Stuttgart, earning their first points of the season and ending a dismal six-match losing streak at the start of the 2026/27 campaign.

Long-awaited Bundesliga debut

The footballer joined the German club during the summer 2026 transfer window from Shakhtar Donetsk. However, his debut was delayed due to a severe knee injury involving a torn intra-articular ligament. As a result of this setback, the defender was forced to miss about two months of recovery and intense rehabilitation.

The Ukrainian player returned to the official squad list only in October. In the fixture against Stuttgart, the coaching staff decided to introduce the newcomer in the second half, bringing him onto the pitch in the 71st minute. Konoplya took his usual position on the right flank of the defense, replacing American player Joe Scally.

The course of a tense match

The encounter started at a high pace, with both teams exchanging goals in the first half. After the break, the Monchengladbach side seized the initiative, twice striking the opponents' net and building a comfortable lead to secure the positive result.

Following the Ukrainian defender's appearance on the pitch, Stuttgart players intensified their attacks and managed to reduce the deficit. Nevertheless, Borussia's defense, led by the newcomer, held firm under late pressure to claim a long-awaited victory.

Significance of the win and future fixtures

Despite securing three points, Borussia Monchengladbach remains at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings. The interrupted streak of six consecutive losses is expected to provide an emotional boost for the team in upcoming fixtures.

Already on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the squad will play their next official fixture. Konoplya's team will face Karlsruher in the DFB-Pokal, where they will aim to build on their recent success.
