On August 15, 2026, soldiers of the 41st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released a series of aerial photographs of the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. The images, obtained using unmanned aerial vehicles, demonstrate extensive destruction in residential districts. According to military data, the footage captures the state of multi-story panel buildings, which, according to their assessments, were damaged as a result of artillery shelling and air strikes.
State of infrastructure and housing
The published materials clearly show destruction in residential micro-districts. In the center of the frame, a panel building is captured, the structure of which, according to the authors of the photos, has partially collapsed. Before the start of hostilities in February 2022, Kupyansk was a large settlement with a population of about 27,000 people and an important railway hub. According to current data, the presented footage records the absence of entire residential buildings suitable for living in the city.
Situation with the civilian population and evacuation
According to the Kupyansk City Military Administration, by the beginning of 2026, about 3,500 civilians remained in the city. After combat operations intensified on the outskirts in mid-summer, forced evacuation measures were carried out. At the moment, the number of civilians remaining in the city is estimated at less than 500 people. Limited social services are functioning in the city, and access to shops and pharmacies is difficult.
Evacuation efforts continue by the National Police and the State Emergency Service (SES). Rescue teams are evacuating the remaining residents, primarily elderly people who were in basement premises. The evacuation process is complicated by the activity of unmanned aerial vehicles, which, according to reports, are attacking vehicles at the exits from the city. In the last 24 hours, according to reports, several people were evacuated.
Military situation in the Kupyansk direction
According to the briefing of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine dated August 15, 2026, 14 offensive actions by Russian troops were recorded in the Kupyansk direction over the past 24 hours. The main focus of hostilities has shifted to the left bank of the Oskol River, particularly in the areas of the settlements of Holubovka and Petro-Ivanovka.
Analytical data indicates attempts by Russian units to advance near the village of Peshchane with the aim of reaching Kupyansk-Uslovoy. Ukrainian defense forces, including the 41st and 116th Separate Mechanized Brigades, continue to hold defensive lines under conditions of intense artillery and aviation pressure.
