A night attack by Russia has damaged energy facilities in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, and the capital is facing what Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has described as an “extremely difficult” energy supply situation. According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the mayor, failures in the power system have already affected the operation of Kyiv's heat and water supply systems. Energy workers and municipal services, he said, are working in an enhanced mode to restore services to residents as quickly as possible.
Three ballistic strikes overnight
According to Klitschko, Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles three times tonight. The first strike occurred on the evening of November 6, and the second, according to the mayor, targeted infrastructure facilities in the capital's suburbs. Three people were injured in the Solomianskyi district as a result of the strikes, including a child. The scale of the damage to energy infrastructure in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, as of the morning of November 7, is still being assessed.
Electricity, heat, and water under threat
Disturbances in the power grid have directly impacted public services: Kyiv has faced issues with heat and water supply. According to estimates previously voiced by local officials and experts, the city's left bank is at risk regarding heating, with up to two million residents potentially facing a lack of stable heating. Power outages, in turn, are already affecting the operation of the water supply. Utility workers are continuing to connect residential buildings to heating and mitigate the consequences of the blackouts.
Zelenskyy's warning and directive on repairs
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on the eve of the night attack that Moscow was preparing strikes on bridges and energy infrastructure. Against the backdrop of delays in restoring damaged facilities, the head of state also gave an urgent order to present measures concerning companies that are lagging behind in repairs and the restoration of energy facilities after shelling. Thus, the strikes on the energy sector have become not just an operational but a systemic problem for Kyiv's municipal complex.
Conflict over winter preparation in the capital
On the eve of the attack, a dispute escalated between the Kyiv and central authorities regarding preparations for winter in the capital. Klitschko appealed to the president, calling for an end to “searching for the guilty,” stating that public accusations and a lack of interaction between levels of government hinder work during Russian attacks. Amidst ongoing strikes on infrastructure, the question of coordinating the efforts of Kyiv and the government is becoming one of the key issues for ensuring the city's life support during the heating season.
