Ukraine's capital has received another batch of fire trucks from its twin city — Barcelona. This was announced by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko in his Telegram channel, where he published photos of two new fire vehicles handed over by the Spanish city. According to the mayor, since the start of the full-scale war, Barcelona has been providing Kyiv with comprehensive support, including the transfer of fire trucks, generators, and other humanitarian aid. “And today Kyiv received two more fire trucks from Barcelona, which will strengthen the capabilities of our emergency services,” Klitschko emphasized.
Details of the meeting and the equipment transferred
The Mayor of Kyiv noted that during his visit to the Ukrainian capital, he met with the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and a delegation from the Spanish city. The published photos show two fire trucks: a Mercedes-Benz Axor with fleet number B-407 and a MAN with number B-409, both bearing the inscription “BOMBERS” — the Catalan designation for fire units. The windshields of the vehicles display the flags of Ukraine and Spain, symbolizing the bilateral partnership. Klitschko noted that in wartime conditions, when it is critically important for the city to respond swiftly to emergencies, the new vehicles will help mitigate the consequences of shelling and save citizens' lives.
Memorandum of cooperation between the two capitals
In addition to the transfer of equipment, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between Kyiv and Barcelona during the visit. The document outlines areas of joint work in the development of urban infrastructure, energy efficiency, as well as veterans' and other socially significant projects. Klitschko expressed gratitude to the Mayor of Barcelona, the city council, and the city's community for their consistent support of Kyiv and Ukraine. “I am convinced that the partnership between Kyiv and Barcelona has great potential and, after the end of the war — in the reconstruction of the Ukrainian capital, the development of urban infrastructure, energy efficiency, mobility, digitalization, culture, sport, youth and veterans' projects,” the mayor stated.
The history of twinning: from 2022 to deepening ties
Kyiv and Barcelona officially became twin cities in September 2022, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed. Since then, cooperation between the two capitals has been steadily expanding. In April 2026, Vitali Klitschko met with Jaume Collboni in Madrid at the Bloomberg CityLab forum, where the parties agreed on further deepening of support for Kyiv and the development of the partnership in the future. The current transfer of fire trucks and the signing of a new memorandum are a logical continuation of this line of interaction.
The context of international support for Kyiv
The supply of specialized equipment from Barcelona fits into the broader context of international aid to the Ukrainian capital. It was previously reported that Klitschko had showcased new specialized equipment transferred to defend Kyiv by Belgium. Thus, the Ukrainian capital continues to receive material support from a number of European twin cities, which helps strengthen the civil protection infrastructure and ensure a swift response to the consequences of military actions.
