Kyiv residents and visitors have been warned of temporary changes to traffic organization in the area of one of the capital's key transport hubs — the South Bridge over the Dniper River. According to information published by the press service of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA), citing the municipal enterprise "Kyivavtodor Most," traffic in one direction has been partially restricted for several days. The restrictions are in effect from September 22 to 25 inclusive, as confirmed by a diagram posted on the city hall's official portal, kyivcity.gov.ua.
Reason for the restrictions and nature of the works
As explained by the municipal enterprise "Kyivavtodor Most," the need for temporary restrictions arose due to repair work: during the specified period, specialists are restoring the asphalt-concrete pavement on the viaduct in the second lane of traffic. This is why the throughput capacity in the work zone has been reduced, and traffic in that direction is required to move in the far-left lane. The administration draws drivers' attention to the fact that traffic may slow down and congestion may form in the viaduct area, and recommends planning routes with the restrictions in mind.
How traffic will change for drivers
In practical terms, this means that from September 22 to 25, one of the lanes on the viaduct near the South Bridge will be closed for repairs, and traffic in the corresponding direction will move in the far-left lane. The KCSA emphasizes that the restrictions are temporary and have been introduced strictly for the duration of the pavement laying and restoration works. Drivers are advised to choose alternative routes in advance, especially during peak hours, to avoid additional congestion in the Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi districts, through which this section runs.
Context: the bridge's status and its link to the metro
It is worth recalling that the South Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Dniper River, considered the tallest in the capital: its pylon stands 133 meters high. The structure is located in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi districts and is part of the international road M03 — E40. In addition, the Syretska–Pecherska, so-called "green" line of the Kyiv Metro runs across the bridge, making this hub critically important for the city's transport connectivity. It is separately noted that from September 9, the metro across the South Bridge will also operate during "yellow" air-raid alerts, which further increases the load on this section and the importance of keeping it in working condition.
What else is changing in the capital
The repairs near the South Bridge are not the only change in Kyiv's road network. It was previously reported that traffic will be restricted near the Gavan Bridge until the end of the year, and that adjustments are being introduced for drivers and passengers in light of regular air-raid alerts. Thus, the partial restriction near the South Bridge on September 22–25 fits into the overall cycle of planned works by "Kyivavtodor" and "Kyivavtodor Most" on the maintenance and repair of bridge structures and viaducts this year. The municipal enterprise has called on citizens to understand the temporary inconveniences, since timely pavement repair increases the safety and longevity of one of Kyiv's main transport arteries.
