The incident involving the Lviv-Chernivtsi train, which departed on October 15, 2026, leaving 25 passengers behind on the tracks, has received an official explanation from Ukrzaliznytsia. The situation arose following an emergency stop due to an air raid alert and the need to evacuate citizens for safety reasons. Video footage circulated on social media showing outraged individuals stranded in a field, claiming that the train left shortly after the "all-clear" signal without waiting for those who had evacuated.

Railway operator's version

During an internal audit conducted by Ukrzaliznytsia, it was established that during the safety stop, a group of 25 people decided to leave the evacuation site and proceed on their own to the city of Kolomyia, located approximately four kilometers from the railway tracks. According to the company's statement, these passengers did not inform the train crew about their plans to change their route.

The company also explained the procedures followed after the threat was cleared. Upon receiving information from the monitoring center that the danger had passed, railway employees began notifying passengers and organized boarding. Staff used light signals in the dark to help people return to the train. The train resumed movement only after no more passengers were left near the carriages and no one responded to the conductors' calls.

Reaction of authorized bodies

The situation attracted the attention of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets. The ombudsman emphasized the importance of proper coordination by railway staff during evacuation procedures amid the threat of shelling. In his address to the leadership of Ukrzaliznytsia, he focused on the need to clarify all circumstances that led to a significant group of people being left behind.

Consequences and future measures

At present, according to the company's official data, no complaints from the passengers of this specific trip regarding being intentionally abandoned have been received. This case has brought attention to the importance of behavioral protocols for both railway staff and passengers during emergency stops. In connection with the incident, relevant agencies are reminding of the need for strict compliance with evacuation instructions to avoid such situations in the future and ensure the safety of all transport participants.
