Scientists at the Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv are actively working on creating advanced antitumor drugs and discovering new biologically active compounds. This was announced by the institute's director, Kostiantyn Dmytruk, who noted that the institution's staff is distributed across several specialized departments focusing on microorganisms, cell lines, and modern biotechnology methods.

Research Structure and Focus Areas of the Institute

The Institute of Cell Biology comprises four specialized departments, each addressing unique scientific tasks. Approximately half of the institute's researchers work with microorganisms, predominantly yeast and bacteria, while the remaining specialists focus on studying healthy and cancer cell lines. The Department of Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology applies genetic engineering methods to produce valuable compounds using yeast cultures.

Simultaneously, the Department of Analytical Biotechnology investigates promising enzymes to create modern biosensors and analytes. Another cutting-edge direction is the synthesis of nanozymes, which are artificial enzymes created based on nanomaterials. This multidisciplinary framework enables the institute to comprehensively address fundamental and applied tasks in modern biomedicine.

Search for Small Molecules and Targeted Tumor Effects

One of the key research areas of the institute is the search for small molecules with pronounced antitumor activity. According to Kostiantyn Dmytruk, researchers are concentrating on heterocyclic compounds that combine multiple active fragments. This approach makes it possible to obtain substances with higher efficacy and targeted impact on pathological cells.

Special attention is paid to finding compounds that specifically target molecular targets in malignant cells, such as specific proteins or signaling pathways disrupted by mutations. This maximizes the therapeutic effect while minimizing the negative impact of developing drugs on healthy body tissues, the safety of which is thoroughly checked for toxicity and DNA damage.

Metabolic Therapy and Combined Approaches

Long-term research at the institute aims to create combined methods of metabolic antitumor therapy. This approach is based on using special enzymes capable of effectively cleaving amino acids critically needed by aggressive tumors, such as arginine, glutamine, and asparagine. Restricting access to these substances significantly suppresses the growth and proliferation of cancer cells.

To implement this strategy, scientists have created their own microbial producers of recombinant enzymes and developed comprehensive approaches combining them with plant-derived amino acid analogues. All obtained combined compounds undergo mandatory testing on laboratory animals with tumors, and the most promising scientific results are supported by international publications and protective patents.

Significance of Developments for Modern Medicine

The creation of innovative antitumor compounds and metabolic therapy methods opens new prospects in oncology treatment. Successful trials by Lviv scientists demonstrate the high potential of Ukrainian science in developing targeted medicinal products with minimal side effects. Further implementation of these technologies into clinical practice can significantly expand the arsenal of modern oncology.
