On Monday, August 3, the Chernihiv region was subjected to a large-scale attack by Russian occupiers. The enemy launched a massive strike using rocket-powered unmanned aerial vehicles, including the newest hybrid of a cruise missile and a drone, known as the 'Banderol'. This was reported by Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration (RMA).
The Threat of New High-Speed Drones
The specific nature of this new threat lies in the high flight speed of the 'Banderol' drones, which reaches 650 km/h. This makes them an extremely difficult target for air defense systems. Russian military forces are actively seeking ways to launch such drone-missiles from ground platforms to conceal attack preparations and make them unexpected for Ukrainian defenders. However, this method significantly reduces the operational range of this weapon.
Defense Results in July
Despite the increasing complexity of the tasks, Ukrainian defenders continue their watch. Vyacheslav Chaus announced the reinforcement of forces protecting the region's airspace. The RMA press service summarized the air defense performance for July: the effectiveness was approximately 70%. Over the course of the month, defenders managed to shoot down 865 strike UAVs in the region's airspace. Another approximately 200 drones were lost by the enemy locally or suppressed by electronic warfare means.
Destruction in Chernihiv and Suburbs
During the attacks on August 3, businesses, logistics companies, and critical infrastructure in Chernihiv, Pryluky, and Novhorod-Siverskyi came under fire. In Chernihiv itself, impacts and the fall of debris from Russian drones were recorded on the territory of enterprises. As a result, a fire broke out in a workshop and warehouse, and vehicles were damaged. Debris also fell on the territory of a logistics company and near a modular settlement in the Kyseleve hromada.
Strikes on Pryluky and Novhorod-Siverskyi
In Pryluky, drones hit storage facilities containing agricultural machinery and a logistics company. About ten cars and the same number of cargo trailers were destroyed, with damage to other vehicles. In Novhorod-Siverskyi, strikes targeted logistics companies and communications facilities. Administrative premises and vehicles were damaged. Russian drones also attacked villages in the Novhorod-Siverskyi hromada, where private homes and vehicles were damaged.
Casualties
As a result of these massive attacks, four people were injured — three men and one woman. In particular, in the Kyivka hromada, the enemy struck the territory of an agricultural enterprise, where injuries were recorded. In the villages of the Novhorod-Siverskyi hromada, a civilian man was also injured due to damage to a private home.
