Large-Scale Attack on Southern and Eastern Ukraine
On the night of August 9, 2026, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out one of the largest attacks in recent times, deploying more than 200 unmanned aerial vehicles and a wide range of missile weapons. The main direction of the strike was the Odesa region, but Kharkiv, Dnipro, and other regions were also hit. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the enemy used Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Oniks anti-ship missiles, and Kh-31P anti-radiation missiles launched from the territory of Crimea and the waters of the Black Sea.
Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted 179 enemy drones in the north, south, and east of the country. Despite the successful actions of the air defense, 22 hits on various objects were recorded, resulting in significant destruction and human casualties.
Catastrophic Consequences in Odesa
Odesa became the epicenter of the night tragedy. As a result of strikes on the city and the region, residential buildings, port infrastructure facilities, and energy capacities were damaged. Representatives of DTEK called this attack one of the largest for the region in the current year. As a result of damage to the power grids, a significant part of the city's districts was left without electricity, which also paralyzed the operation of electric transport.
As of the morning of August 9, eight injured people were known in the Odesa region. In addition, due to the consequences of the shelling, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported a temporary restriction of traffic on the Odesa-Reni highway. This creates serious logistical problems, blocking movement to border crossing points with Moldova and back.
Tragedy in Kharkiv and Strikes on Pavlohrad
In the Kharkiv region, the consequences of the attack were particularly severe. A Russian drone scored a direct hit on a multi-story residential building in Saltivka, destroying four floors of the building. According to the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the number of injured reached 23 people. Five people are in hospitals, including one woman in critical condition. Unfortunately, two people died as a result of this strike.
In the Dnipro region, the strikes hit Pavlohrad. The enemy attacked facilities near a shopping center and energy capacities. As a result of the incident, nine people were injured, including four children. Also under fire that night were the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Kherson, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions.
Enemy Strategy and Countermeasures
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Russia continues to rely on the use of ballistic missiles. Only during the current week, the occupiers used 61 missiles against Ukraine, 56 of which attacked along a ballistic trajectory. The enemy also launched more than 1,560 strike drones and 1,540 guided aerial bombs. Zelenskyy emphasized that to counter this terror, Ukraine needs more air defense systems and stricter sanctions pressure on Russia.

There are minor discrepancies in the figures for intercepted drones in different sources. The Ukrainian Air Force reports 179 downed drones, while some summaries, including RBK-Ukraine materials, cite the total number of launched drones as 202 units. The difference may be due to the fact that some drones were destroyed in the air, while others crashed or fell due to loss of control, not hitting the target but also not being recorded as shot down by air defense. Also, data on the number of injured in Odesa may be updated as aid arrives and damaged buildings are inspected.
