Large-scale outages have hit key internet services, banking systems, and cloud platforms across Russia. The issues began following a nighttime drone attack on Sberbank's mega-data center located in Balakovo, Saratov Oblast. According to monitoring agencies, users flooded the networks with reports of being unable to access familiar digital resources, paralyzing the operations of numerous commercial and government structures.
The Scale of Digital Collapse
According to Russian outage monitoring service DETECTOR404, the wave of disruptions affected the Mail.Ru ecosystem, Mail.ru Cloud, Kontur services, Tochka Bank, VK WorkSpace corporate platforms, VKontakte social network, Samokat delivery service, amoCRM, the GigaChat artificial intelligence, Sberbank itself, the Ozon marketplace, St. Petersburg provider SkyNet, and the PGA BATTLEGROUNDS gaming platform. Such a broad impact highlights the critical dependence of Russia's digital infrastructure on major data centers.
The Balakovo Attack and Reactions
Sberbank's mega-data center in Balakovo was attacked on the night of October 14, 2026. A series of explosions triggered a massive fire at the facility. Ukrainian company Fire Point officially confirmed the strike on the data center, publishing an ironic statement: "Well, you didn't think everything would be limited to Yandex, did you? Sberbank, take the relay." Notably, shortly before this on October 11, a similar drone strike disabled Yandex's data center in Vladimir Oblast, causing nationwide disruptions.
Contradictory Data
Despite the scale of the initial blackouts, official and monitoring sources present varying details regarding the current state of the infrastructure. While monitoring services recorded a deep collapse across dozens of platforms, by the time of publication, some of them—including Tochka Bank, VKontakte, VK WorkSpace, amoCRM, and Samokat—had restored operations and were marked as "Working." Technology company representatives are gradually transferring critical processes to backup capacities, though the overall vulnerability of cloud giants remains a source of serious concern for experts.
Consequences for the Digital Economy
Experts note that consecutive strikes on the Yandex and Sberbank data centers demonstrate the extreme vulnerability of centralized cloud storage and data processing hubs. Restoring the infrastructure requires significant time and scarce equipment. Amid the ongoing crisis, Russia's IT sector is forced to urgently restructure data logistics and seek new ways to ensure the fault tolerance of critical services.
