A massive humanitarian and natural disaster has unfolded in southwestern France. Authorities were forced to evacuate nearly four thousand residents and tourists from the resort areas of the Atlantic coast. The reason for these emergency measures was uncontrolled wildfires raging in the region with incredible force.
Fire has engulfed an area larger than Paris
Evacuation was declared in the area of the popular resort of Lacanau, located west of Bordeaux. Fire brigades are fighting a hard battle against the flames, trying to contain the spread of the fire. According to the latest data from French authorities, the fire in the Gironde department has already destroyed about 42,000 hectares of forest and vegetation.
To understand the scale of the disaster: this area is approximately four times larger than the territory of Paris. The fire is devouring the landscape, leaving behind only ash and smoke, which envelops the sky over the region.
Macron: "The most serious crisis since World War II"
The situation has reached the level of a national crisis. French President Emmanuel Macron, in his statement, called the events the most serious challenge of this type that the country has faced since World War II. The head of state announced the holding of an interdepartmental crisis meeting to coordinate the actions of all services to extinguish the fires that have engulfed several departments.
Threat of a new wave of heat
The situation remains extremely tense and may worsen in the coming days. Meteorologists predict the return of extreme heat, which will become ideal fuel for the fire. Due to high temperatures, the risk of new ignitions remains critically high, complicating the work of rescuers.
Disaster in Spain and Italy
The problem of wildfires is not limited to France alone. In neighboring Spain, the greatest concern is the massive fire in the province of Avila. This fire has already entered history as the largest in the country, covering an area of about 50,000 hectares.
At the same time, in some areas of Spain where the situation began to stabilize, authorities have already begun to gradually cancel evacuation orders. Nevertheless, fires continue to rage in other regions of France, in particular in the Var department, although rescuers there managed to partially bring the fire under control.
Mass evacuation in Europe
According to the media, over the past week, due to wildfires in France, Spain, and Italy, about 330,000 people were forced to leave their homes or vacation spots. Earlier, it was reported that uncontrolled fires in Spain and France had already forced more than 250,000 people to flee. Thousands of people remain waiting for the elements to subside and for rescuers to ensure the safety of their return.
