Plans to build a bridge across the Strait of Messina, which would connect the island of Sicily to the Italian mainland, have been revived in Italy. The ambitious project has been debated for over two thousand years, yet it remains a subject of fierce controversy today due to seismic, technical, environmental, and financial risks. According to the latest statements from officials, the cost of the modern project is estimated at 13.5 billion euros, and the central span of the structure will be 3.3 km, which could potentially make it the longest suspension bridge in the world.

A History Spanning Two Millennia

The idea of crossing the Strait of Messina dates back to antiquity. According to Pliny the Elder, as early as 251 BC the Romans built a temporary bridge across the strait using boats and barrels. In the following centuries, the concept of a large-scale structure repeatedly returned to the public agenda: it was supported, in particular, by Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi. In 2022, the project once again became one of Italy's priority infrastructure directions after it was backed by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.

Scale and Parameters of the Structure

According to the plan, the bridge is to connect Torre Faro in the northeast of Sicily with Villa San Giovanni in Calabria. The 3.3 km central span would make the structure one of the longest suspension bridges on the planet. The design is to include six lanes for vehicular traffic, two service lanes, and two railway tracks. Taken as a whole, no similar structure has any counterparts. Implementing the project is expected to require the expropriation of more than 400 real estate properties in coastal areas.

Contradictory Data

The timeline for launching construction appears contradictory. Italian authorities have postponed the start of works several times: initially it was planned for 2024, then for early 2025, and afterwards for early 2026. In February, Transport Minister Salvini stated that construction should begin in the summer. However, according to reports, in the Torre Faro area, where the structure is slated to be built, no significant signs of the start of works were observed by mid-2026. Disagreements also exist on the technical front: former dean of the engineering faculty at the University of Catania, Antonino Rizzitano, argues that modern technologies do not allow the reliability of main suspension cables of such length to be properly tested, and calls the project "technically unfeasible." The company Webuild, which is set to carry out the construction, responds that these concerns have already been considered and refuted in a 2025 technical report.

Seismic and Environmental Risks

The region is characterized by high seismic activity. According to geologist Carlo D'Alonzo, over the past 40 years more than five thousand low-magnitude earthquakes have been recorded within a 40 km radius of the potential construction site. Proponents of the project insist that the bridge is designed to withstand extreme conditions and should be able to endure tremors of up to 7.1 magnitude. Separate disputes are being waged over the structure's impact on the environment: ecologists fear that the bridge could harm an important migration corridor for birds and marine mammals. According to conservation organizations, during just six weeks of spring migration, millions of birds may fly over the area of the future bridge.

Local Residents and Activists

Not all local residents support the project either. People whose homes are planned for expropriation fear that even an unfinished construction site will permanently alter the local landscape. Activist Mariella Valbruzzi, who has been opposing the construction for over a decade, notes that the greatest danger may be linked not only to the bridge itself: "What worries me is that work on the roads and viaducts may still begin, leaving this pristine landscape buried under concrete, with or without the bridge." Thus, the fate of the project remains open, and in 2026 it continues to be one of Italy's most controversial infrastructure concepts.
